Anet fans of George R.R. Martin?
I am currently reading George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice book series and have been seeing a lot of name similarites in Nightfall and these books.
Koss= a character in the book and our Hero in NF
Lightbringer= a sword in the book and a Title in NF
Yoren= character in book, similar to Goren a hero in NF
Sunspear=a town in the book, well we all know the Sunspears in NF
I think its cool that people at Anet are 'paying homage to' a good book series like this one. Most of the role playing games I have played, I have named my game characters after characters from good books I have read.
Anyone find other similarities between a Guild Wars chapter and a book?
By the way, for fantasy book readers, I am finding this series to be much better that Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series.

Finally somebody who isn't OMGJORDANPWNSMARTINSLOL. I've explained numerous references to my guild mates and they don't understand because they are all, unfortunately, stuck reading WoT. Ugh.

I have read the first three of George Martin's books. I have to say the first book is the best, especially the prologue. Excellent narration and exciting twists. However, the first book is actually 3 separate short stories very loosely tied together: the cold north, Kingdom's capital, and the dragon princess in a land far away. I wish there was more continuity going from the beginning of the first book to the first book's ending. Nevertheless, his fantasy book is definitely a refreshing departure from the typical valiant hero vanquishing baddies against impossible odds stories.

I happen to like both the Wheel of Time series and A song of Ice and Fire series. Over all I prefer the Wheel of Time, but it's hard to compare partially because the scope of Martin's books aren't near as large yet - in time that may change. Plus how each series ends will have an effect on my enjoyment.
There are tons and tons of references to fantasy books through the game. There are quite a few quest acceptance lines that are from books, lots of names, and quests that are based off of stories.
Chances are if it is one of the popular Fantasy series (and A Song of Ice and Fire definitely fits that) then there are some references in Guild Wars. They obviously like corny puns on several different sub-cultures.

Yoren is not anything like Goren, except that their names rhyme.

I've read all the books in the series so far. I also noticed some names in GW that seemed cheesed from GRRM's series.
I didn't know that HBO is going to film the series. This is awesome news though. If it were any network other than HBO doing this I would have my doubts, but their dramas are always superb. I just hope that this wasn't a reason for canceling Rome after only two seasons. It's probably my second favorite television series of all time =/

There's a metric assload of references in Guild Wars. My particular favorite is all the Firefly stuff in the Jade Sea, and the dead ale wives stuff in TopK and over Tyria.

Here is a link to an article about the HBO series.

I'm pretty excited to see what it turns out like, HBO imo has done a good job with thier mini-series in the past. At the very least they put more of a budget into their productions than the Sci-Fi channel

Awesome series. And yes, I've noticed the similarities as well. When I saw the name Sunspear during the NF PvE weekend it made me read the series all over again. ^^

Orbberius are you mad, the first book was good, the last was continuing a descent into self indulgent excess lacking an editor with the guts to upset an author forgetting that there are readers out there less than impressed with dense pages of ordinary, indeed, florid prose, cliched metaphors, wooden characters and narratorial tics used excessively to the point of nausea.
If you want decent fantasy try Robert Holdstock, Phillip Pullman or Ursula LeGuin at least.

I agree on the last book, Martin is running in the troubles of lengthy fantasy sagas. I hope he does not follow the path of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. But the last book was definitely a filler. And the next part was supposed to come very soon afterwards, as he had to split the book - but nothing so far.
Still, I will not start reading Ursula K. LeGuin because of that, not my cup of tea.
Regarding YOREN/GOREN: Martin's Yoren would feel insulted or amused - he is not as naive and dumb, a totally different character.
Maybe we will have GUILD WARS IV - A GAME OF THRONES.
(could turn out as LAME AS BONES)

Phillip Pullman was great when I read it, but I read the last Martin book in about 2 days. Pretty sure I've picked out some more references but can't remember them.

I cringe everytime I see a supposed reference to Martin's books, the man is a hack same goes for jordan btw, neither can finish a story and have way to many characters running around. Martin's last book had absolutely zero story progress in it. While Jordan's last one did progress somewhat the 4 before that hardly did. So why the debate about who is better is pretty futile to me, since neither are that great to begin with IMO
I much rather read Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Roger Zelazny, C. S. Friedman or Orson Scott Card. to name a few, ofcourse they don't all write mainly fantasy.
